Dorothy was born in Gile, Wisconsin on March 25, 1921 to Anton ‘Tom’ and Selma ‘Sal’ Zandi. She was their only child. The family moved to Flint, Michigan in her early childhood. She grew up on Illinois Avenue near her beloved Auntie Emma Gilbert and her dear cousins, Les, LaVerne (Bartosz), June (Dolan) and Robert Gilbert. She graduated from Flint Central High School where she met the love of her life, Lyle Andrus. Lyle and Dorothy eloped to LaGrange, Indiana on February 8th, 1939. Together they had 4 children; Paul Lyle, Sally Lucille (Jim Creech), Nancy Marie (Bill Storey), Kathy Joann (Richard Schalter); 7 grandchildren, Jill Marie (Jim Bauer), Matt Creech (Holly), Jeff Storey, ‘Kate’ Kathryn Ann (Jeff Ruggles), Lindsay Marie (Jason Porter), R. Adam Schalter, Kellen Kathleen Schalter; 5 great-grandchildren, Zachary, Haleigh and Jackson Bauer; Riley and Connor Creech. At 49, Dorothy went back to college to once again pursue her passion of nursing. She graduated in 1974 with high honors. Although she never worked professionally, her knowledge of medicine combined with her compassion for others was used often throughout
her life. She was a tireless volunteer serving in the American Legion, The National T.T.T. Society and the PTA. She also served as a facilitator for a grief support group, took blood pressures at the senior center, taught Sunday School and was a room mother and a Girl Scout leader. Even in the last year of her life, she continued to reach out to those around her, seeking to make new residents at her new home, The McFarlan House, feel more comfortable.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lyle; her son Paul; her son-in-law, Bill and her parents Tom and Sal. She is irreplaceable and will be missed greatly by her family. The Best Things Come In Small Packages…
