
TEGELS, Vincent A. 78, of Midland, passed peacefully, Wednesday evening, March 9, 2011, with his loving family surrounding him.
Vincent was born June 25, 1932 in Marshall, Minnesota, son of the late Lawrence and Catherine (Hovland) Tegels. At ten years of age his family moved to Grand Ledge, where he graduated from High School in 1950. He joined the U.S. Army and served for three years. Vincent enjoyed thirty-eight years of barbering after two years of training at FerrisState College and one year at Flint Barbering Institute. He was a member of Assumption Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church and was a life member of the American Legion. Over the years he found pleasure in collecting & restoring classic automobiles, literature of all types and the simple things like good food & good friends.
Vincent met the love of his life Shirley M. (Steinka) Shufelt, whom he married on July 30, 1960. Their life together was full of a wealth of experiences, which included raising her four children, being grandparents and great grandparents. Vincent unofficially adopted Shirley’s four children, who esteem him highly for his parental role in their lives. He was co-founder with his wife Shirley and daughter Darlene of Shirlene’s Cuisine & co-proprietor of The Old Hickory House.
He is survived by his wife of fifty years, Shirley; two sons, Fred (Carol) Shufelt of Hutchinson, Minnesota and Robert (Sandy) Shufelt of Shepherd; one daughter, Darlene Klemkosky (Louis) Thompson of Hope; twin sister, Vivian Tegels of Lansing; one brother, Daniel Tegels; two sisters, Francis Baker of Grand Ledge and Rita Kemps of Arizona; daughter-in-law, Kathy Shufelt and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, Vincent was preceded in death by one son, Eddie Shufelt; grandson, Brian Klemkosky; older sister, Katherine Kuschlain; younger brother, Dennis Tegels; son-in-law, Roger Klemkosky; twin brothers, Loren & Lawrence; and sister, Cathleen. Friends and family will forever remember him for his quick wit and kind heart.
SERVICES The Funeral Liturgy will take place at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, March 15, 2011 at Assumption of The Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church, 3516 E Monroe at Jefferson. Father Kevin Maksym will officiate, with graveside burial rites in Old Calvary Cemetery. Military honors will be presented by the Midland Area Veterans and the United States Army.
VISITATION Vincent’s family will receive friends at the Ware-Smith-Woolever Funeral Home, 1200 West Wheeler Street on Monday from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m., and on Tuesday from 9 a.m. until time of the Funeral Liturgy.
VIGIL SERVICE
A Vigil for the deceased will take place 7 p.m. Monday evening at the funeral home.
