WELLS, Jr. Chester E. – Of Mt. Morris, age 87, died Sunday, March 20, 2011 at McLaren Regional Medical Center. Funeral service will be held 1p.m. Wednesday, March 23, 2011 at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road, Pastor Bruce Darling officiating. Burial in Crestwood Cemetery. Visitation 1-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Chester was born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on September 11, 1923 and was a resident of the Flint area all of his life. Chester served in the United States Navy during World War II retired from the City of Flint. On January 19, 1978, he married Mary Joann.

Surviving are wife, Joanna; daughters, Katie and Bob Sigsby, Chris and Tom Funch, Stacey Wells and Kelly Yuhos; 3 step-children, William Harrison, James and Jenette Harrison, Beth and Lee Burgess; 13 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Betty June Wells and son, Chester Everett Wells, III.

PENNINGTON, Alfred C. – 92

Pennington, Mr. Alfred C. (Al) long time Millington resident passed away early Thursday morning with family at his side, Al was 92.
Alfred Charles Pennington the son of Matthew & Amanda (Waddell) Pennington was born in Elliot County Kentucky on September 14, 1918. Al served our county in the US Navy during WW II. On November 21, 1939 Al married his wife of 65 years Miss Edna Craycraft, Edna precedes Al in death on Nov. 23, of 2004. As a young man Al worked in the Civilian Conservation Corp, he was a retired engineer from Fisher Coldwater Road Plant of General Motors. Al served several terms on the Millington Board of Education as president of the board. He was also a member of the Millington Masonic Lodge F.&AM Lodge #470. Al was founder of the Cardinal Machine Company. The business originated at his Millington residence and with much success and growth of the business he and his son moved the business to its current location in the Clio Industrial Park, Clio Michigan, and the business today is operated by his son Brian & wife Linda and grandson Nicholas. the Pennington family would like to express their great appreciation to the care give by the staff of Avalon Hospice, McLaren Homewood Village Staff, and most of all to Nicholas Surdu a long time devoted family friend.
Al leaves to cherish his memories; three daughters; Beverly Leiblong-Cain, Blanche & Ken Gleason, Brenda & Joel Katz, two sons; Al & Mary Beth Pennington Jr. and Brian & Linda Pennington, nine grandchildren, Kristin, Pam, Sean, Abby, Erin, Michael, Sarah, Amanda, and Nick, seven great-grandchildren, Francis, Sarah, Drew, Tanner, Madison, Lilia, and Madelyn. Al leaves also two sisters, Ethel Hughes, and June Lambert, besides his wife he is preceded in death by three brothers and four sisters.
The family has honored Al’s wishes and cremation has taken place. There has been a private family memorial and there may be a gathering at a later date. McNEW, Orville “Lynn” – Age 30, died Wednesday March 16, 2011.
Cremation has taken place. A Memorial Service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, March 21, 2011 at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, G-5176 West Court Street, Flint, Pastor Chris Bocklage and Pastor Martin Watkins officiating. Those desiring may make contributions to the wishes of the family. Lynn was born in Flint, Michigan on September 9, 1980, the son of Orville and Pamela (Taylor) McNew.
Surviving are mother, Pam McNew and Randy Bennett; three children, Cierra, Savannah and Caiden; grandmother, Mimi Taylor; a special thank you to his mentor uncle Chuck and Lisa; many other aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Orville and Papa Taylor.

HELMS, Irma Ione – 90

HELMS, Irma Ione – of Davison, formerly of Flint, age 90, passed away March 17, 2011 at Clare Bridge of Farmington Hills, MI. A Funeral Service will be held 11 am Monday, March 21, 2011 at Allen Funeral Home, 9136 Davison Rd., Davison; Rev. Debbie Line officiating. Burial will follow in Davison Cemetery. Visitation will be 11 am-8 pm Sunday and 10-11 am Monday. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
Irma Morgan-Helms was born on February 20, 1921 in Martinsville, IL to Henry and Rosa Morgan. Growing up on a farm in central Illinois, she graduated from Ridgefarm High School. It was there that she met her future husband, Chester Carl Helms. Their 56-year marriage produced a daughter, Nancy Caroline Helms-Taube and son, Dr. Larry Helms of Medford, Oregon. Irma and Carl left Illinois during the Great Depression and moved to Flint, Michigan where Carl worked at AC Spark Plug. They raised their family on Flint’s East Side before moving to Davison, Michigan in 1962, where they remained for the rest of their lives.
Irma studied with the Chicago Institute of Design and worked in Home Decorating for almost three decades, eventually retiring after 20 years with Advance Electric in Flint. She also attended Flint Community College.
After retiring, Irma was active in various community affairs including volunteering to teach remedial reading to elementary school students in Davison, serving on the Davison Library Board and had a busy and active involvement with the Davison United Methodist Church’s ladies’ circles. An avid and educated collector, she was an acknowledged expert in certain forms of antique glass and jewelry.
Irma devoted her life to her family. She was extremely active in the PTA, child study programs and her children’s school activities. Irma took particular pride in cooking, sewing and passing along those skills to her daughter, Nancy, and later, her two granddaughters. During more than one summer, she even coached her son’s baseball team.
Preceding her in death was her beloved husband, Chester Carl; her daughter, Nancy and a grandson, Michael Joseph Dunn.
Surviving to honor her memory is her sister, Imogene Stimac of Terre Haute, Indiana; son, Dr. Larry Helms; two granddaughters, Carol Giordano and Susan Dunn; grandson, Creighton Helms as well as five great-grandchildren. She leaves an extraordinarily large number of close friends and loving neighbors.

Harris Jr., Ronald “Ronnie” age 43, of Mayville, MI passed away Saturday, March 19, 2011 at University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor, MI. Funeral services will be 11 A.M. Wednesday, March 23, 2011 at the Avram Funeral Home in Mayville, MI with Pastor Raymond Karr officiating. The family will receive visitors 12 – 8 P.M. Tuesday, March 22, 2011 and 10 A.M. until time of the service Wednesday, at the Avram Funeral Home. Burial will take place at North Grove Cemetery with Military Honors being conducted by the Mayville American Legion Post #181, and the Mayville/Vassar VFW Post #10884. Memorial contributions may be made to the Family Discretionary Fund.

Ronnie was born March 22, 1967 to Ronald William Sr. and Nancy Lee (Bader) Harris in Caro, MI. He was a 1985 graduate of Mayville High School and served our country in the U.S. Navy. He worked at Albar Industries of Lapeer for 22 years. Ronnie loved to hunt, fish, MSU sports, bowling, movies, and music.

He is survived by his parents Ronald Sr. and Nancy (Bader) Harris of Mayville, MI, two brothers; Gerald (Barb) Harris of Millington, MI, Troy (Fiancé Karen King) Harris of Mayville, MI, three nieces; Brittany, Lea, Kayla, one nephew; Ryon, and special companions Samson and Nila. Ronnie was preceded in death by his grandparents; Albert and Anna Harris, Harold and Delores Bader, great grandparents; Bill and Mary M. Bader.

CUMMIFORD, KEITH A. age 54 of Otisville, died Friday, March 18, 2011 at Brian’s House in Davison. Funeral Services will be held at 3:00PM on Monday, March 21, 2011 at Hudson Funeral Service with Rev. Ann Norton officiating. Visitation will be Monday from 12-3PM service time. Burial will follow at Smith Hill Cemetery.

Keith was born on May 29, 1956 to Gaynor Cummiford. He loved his grandchildren, enjoyed woodworking, and spending time up north. Surviving is his wife: Rose (Cronkright) Cummiford; Children: Stephanie (Joshua) Krause, Justin Conaway, Jennifer Miller, and Brandon Cummiford; Grandchildren: Jordan, Curtis, Destiny, and Gabriella; Mother: Gaynor (Cummiford) Craidge; Mother-in-Law: Barbara Cronkright; and Sister-in-Law: Jean Whitney. He was preceded in death by his Father-in-Law: Truman Cronkright and Stepfather: Vern Craidge.

ALEX, Janis A. “Jann” – age 51, of Flint, died Saturday, March 19, 2011 at Hurley Medical Center. Funeral Mass will be celebrated 11AM Wednesday, March 23, 2011 at St. John Vianney Catholic Church, 2415 Bagley St., Flint. Fr. Thomas Firestone Celebrant. Visitation will be held 1-4 and 6-8PM Monday, and 3-8PM Tuesday, with a Rosary at 7PM Tuesday at Sharp Funeral Homes, Miller Road Chapel, 8138 Miller Road, Swartz Creek. Visitation will also be held 10AM Wednesday until time of Mass at the church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Brendan McMahan Trust Fund or to the West Flint Animal Hospital, care of Dr. Thomas Baes.

Jann was born December 4, 1959, the daughter of the late Edward J. and Betty J. (Valkoun) Correll. She married Tom Alex Jr. on April 27, 1996 in Flint. Jann enjoyed being a grandmother and spending time with her family and her beloved pets. She was also a great cook, she loved going fishing and spending time outdoors.

Surviving are: husband, Tom Jr.; daughter Nikki Correll (Christopher McMahan); son, Josh Alex; grandson, Brendan McMahan; brother, Michael Correll; mother-in-law, Blanche Alex; brother-in-law, Rod Wilson; sister-in-law, Cindy Wilson; nieces, Jennifer (Chris) White and Jessica Wilson (Mike Mercatante); nephews, Jeff Correll and Jeff Wilson, and her special four-legged family; Zeus, Casey, Gus, Carlos, Molly, Deenie, Sam, Angel and Sydney.
