HOWARD, Truman “Ben” Age 94, of Antrim Township, at Memorial Healthcare, Owosso on Sunday March 28, 2010. Ben was a farmer, ran an excavating business, and was a master welder. He had also worked for Chevrolet and Simplicity Engineering. Services will be at Bancroft United Methodist Church Saturday, April 3 at 1:00 p.m. with Reverend Jeremy Benton officiating. Interment will be at Glass River Cemetery in Antrim Township. Visitation is at Watkins’ Brothers Funeral Home in Bancroft Thursday from 6:00 to 8:00 pm and Friday from 2:00 to 4:00 pm and 6:00 to 8:00 pm with a Masonic Service Friday at 7:30 p.m. Ben was born on the family farm in Antrim Township on November 27, 1915 the second of six children born to Benjamin Franklin Jr. (Linn) and Nina Imogene (Dean) Howard. He attended Morgan #1 Country School and Owosso High School. He graduated from Bancroft High School as the Salutatorian of the Class of 1933. Ben was a member of the Bancroft Methodist church for 80 years and had served as Lay Leader. He sang in the choir where he met the love of his life, the new school teacher from Kalamazoo, Anna Ruth Norcross. They were married at Ft. McPherson, Georgia July 10, 1942 and were married more than 62 years when Anna passed away in 2005. Ben went into the U.S. Army in September 1941. He was a Jeep driver, leading supply convoys in Europe for the 35th Infantry Division. His unit was in five campaigns: Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland, and Central Europe. He was an Expert Rifleman and earned the Good Conduct Medal. He was honorably discharged in November 1945. After the war, Ben and Ann built their home on the family farm and called it BenAnna Ranch. They raised two daughters there and their home was always open to cousins from the city to experience and enjoy the adventure of a farm in the summertime. Ben was an excellent harmonica player and he and his friend Clayton Conrad entertained as an amateur act at the Cheasaning Show Boat. Ben also wrote light verse and his work was published as “For Better or Verse: The View From BenAnna Ranch.” Ben was a Boy Scout in his youth, a 4-H Leader, past member of the 4-H Council and Antrim Township Board. He was a member of the Shiawassee County Historical Society, serving as President for fifteen years. He was involved in saving the Lemon School and worked on the church in the Corunna Historical Village in McCurdy Park. He was a Past Master of the Bancroft Masonic Lodge # 382 which merged with Perry Masonic Lodge # 350 F&AM. He was a 32nd Degree Mason with the Bay City Consistory. Ben never really retired. He continued to make improvements to the farm with his backhoe, worked on welding projects, mowed his lawn and cut weeds with the brush hog. He carried a radio on his tractor so he could listen to Detroit Tiger baseball games as he worked. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and brother, a faithful friend, a man of integrity who loved the beauty of the earth and all its creatures, great and small. He led by example with patience, kindness and a twinkle in his eye, always ready to share the humor of life. He will be missed by the many people whose lives he touched. He is survived by his daughters and their husbands, Elizabeth and Lawrence Poe of Morrice and Peggy and Dr. Ronald Niksich of Georgetown, Texas; granddaughters Sarah Niksich and Emily and husband Curt Laughlin of Austin, Texas and Joanna Poe of Munith, Michigan; brother Henry Howard of Morrice. He is also survived by nephews and nieces: the Hulberts – Bill and Caroline, Jerry and Gail, Gary and Diana; the Jarrads – Jim and Katy and Mary Sang; the Mortimores – John and Bridget, and Nina; cousins Bill Vogt, Rhua Bliss, and Doris Perkins; several of Ann’s nieces and nephews. Also good friends Frances Durling, class of 1933, Ivan Conger, Raymond Love, Lyle and Dee Buchanan, Sharon Bower and Barbara Williamson. Ben was predeceased by his wife Ann, his parents, infant brother Worthington, sisters Ruth Jarrad, Harriet Hulbert and Ellen Mortimore, nephew George Mortimore, friends Glenn Durling and John Vince Wright, special cousin and neighbor Calvin Howard.
