STETZ, John – Of Flint, age 87, died Saturday, February 20, 2010 at Avalon  Hospice. Funeral service will be held 2pm Tuesday, February 23, 2010 at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road Reverend Annie R. Duncan officiating. Burial in Sunset Hills Cemetery. Contributions may be directed to The Shrine Children’s Hospital or Avalon Hospice Visitation 5-8pm Sunday and 12-3 and 5-8pm Monday at the funeral home. A Masonic Memorial Service will be held 7pm Monday.                                                      

John was born in Czechoslovakia on February 13, 1923, to Daniel and Mary Stetz. He married Delores Smith on January 12, 1945 in Flint John served in the US Army during World War II. He was a member Farnumwood Presbyterian Church, VFW Flushing Post, the Flint Shrine Oriental Band, The Bay City Consistory 32nd Degree, ELF Khurafeh Temple, Saginaw and Eastern Stars #138 He was a Past Master of Charles A. Durant Lodge #533 and Flint Masonic Lodge #23. He was employed with and retired from General Motors.

 Surviving are daughter, Julia A Stetz of Flint; Son, Douglas John Stetz of Minneapolis, Brother, Daniel and wife Patsy Stetz of Florida Many favored nieces and nephews.

 He was preceded in death by wife, Dolores in 1994 and daughter, Marja Stetz in 1950.

Iris was born April 30, 1907 in Cornwall, England to the late John and Grace (Toms) Wallis and had resided in Clio since 1935. She married Thomas Nicholas on February 27, 1926 in Utica, MI. He preceded her in death on September 24, 1982. She was a member of Trinity Assembly of God in Mt. Morris.

Surviving are: 9 children, Thomas (Jean) Nicholas Jr. of Clio, Earnest Nicholas of Clio, Robert (Marie) Nicholas of Davison, Ronald Nicholas of Cadillac, Rev. Leonard (Carol) Nicholas of FL, Lawrence (Elinor) Nicholas of Clio, William (Rosemary) Nicholas of Flushing, Esther Runyan of FL, David (Linda) Nicholas of Birch Run; 31 grandchildren; 52 great-grandchildren; 16 great-great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. Glen was born in Flint, MI on July 14, 1940, son of the late Clarence and Eula (Mooney) Mahnke. He married Ellen Switzer on June 10, 1961. Glen was a member of Richfield United Methodist Church and retired from Chrysler. He was a musician and worked with country bands around the area and was a long standing member of the Country Caravan. He also sang in the church choir for many years.

Glen is survived by his wife, Ellen; children, Kristie (David) Parker, Kathy (Chris) Haskins, David (Iris) Mahnke; grandchildren, Ellen and Edward Parker, Heather Sarver, Cameron, Griffin and Duncan Haskins, Anthony and Samantha Mahnke; brothers, John (Carol) Mahnke, Lee (Lenora) Mahnke.

KERTESZ, James – Of Grand Blanc, age 63, died Friday, February 19, 2010 at Genesys Hospice Care Center in Goodrich. Funeral Mass will be celebrated 11am Wednesday, February 24, 2010 at Holy Family Catholic Church, 11824 South Saginaw Street, Flint, Father Ken Coughlin officiating. Burial in Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation 4-8pm Monday and 11am-3pm and 5-8pm Tuesday at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road. A Rosary will be prayed 7pm Tuesday at the funeral home. Mr. Kertesz will be at the church 10am Wednesday until the time of the Mass.

On June 1, 1968, James married Cecilia in Fenton at St. John Catholic Church. James was employed with Buick for 38 years. He enjoyed NASCAR racing, and going to local race tracks. James was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church. 

 Surviving are wife, Cecilia Kertesz of Grand Blanc; 2 sons, Dennis of Grand Blanc and Christopher of Burton; granddaughter, Lillian Kertesz of Flint; sister, Maria and husband Randy Baumbach of Burton; sister-in-law, Stepheny and husband Rod Stephen of Marion, MI; nieces and nephews, Joe and wife Tricia Baumbach of Burton, Bruce Stephen and Tami and husband Rob Lipp of Goodrich. 2 great nephews, Joey and Jayden; 2 great nieces, Jessica and Kylie; He was preceded in death by his son, Jimmy, on August 17, 2002, parents and brother Frank.

HUBER, Jr., Robert T. of Davison, formerly of Otisville, died Thursday February 18, 2010 at Hurley Medical Center. Visitation will be held Monday and Tuesday from 1 – 8 PM at the Hudson Funeral Service, Otisville. Bob Huber was relieved of his stress and worries as he passed away on February 18, 2010 at the age of 42. Bob was born January 28, 1968 to Robert and Judy (Rose) Huber. He leaves behind an amazing wife he loved very much, Janeen Huber, 5 children he adored and cared for (Robert 19, Sinjin 12, Tyler 10, Tristan 4, and Vance 1), his mother: Judy Rose (David), the best grandmother in the world Catherine (Toby) McCulley, a caring uncle: Harvey McCulley, caring aunts Jeanne Potvin (Paul), Alice Wheeler (Richard), sister: Cathy Hodges (Terry) nieces Michelle Hodges, Allison Hodges, TJ Hodges, cousin Sabrina and Mark Glasssetter, Lee Wheeler, Stephanie Wheeler, Jeremy and Tera Wheeler and all of their wonderful children. Bob also leaves behind some good friends and some great ones he would like to recognize James Venrick, Steve Joseph, Donovan Black, John Hess, his son Robert and his best friend for the past 6 years Janeen Huber. After graduating from LakeVille High School in 1986, Bob served an honored and distinguish 8 years in the United States Marine Corps (86-95), five years with 1st Battalion 9th Marines (Walking Dead) 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division during the gulf war and 3 years with MCRD San Diego as a Drill Instructor. During his 8 years in the Marines, Bob acquired a love for volleyball and shot on the Marine Corps Rifle Team for 3 years winning many metals and becoming a US Marine Distinguished Shooter. After his enlistment in the Marines he moved back to Otisville, MI and went to school acquiring a degree in engineering and eventually he worked as an engineer, quality manager, engineering manager, and finally as a project manager for Liquid Molding Systems in Midland. Bob was the driving force in the creation of the LakeVille Youth Football and Cheerleading League, served as the president (LVyouth.com)and assisted the LakeVille football program every way he could. Bob will always be remembered for his passion of things he held dear to his heart-football, Dallas Cowboys, Volleyball, Coaching, his 5 children and his wife. The 3 words that defined Bob Huber are passionate, determined and prideful.

Chris was born in Augusta, KS on December 4, 1921, daughter of the late Homer and Bessie (Miller) Gilbert. She married Edward B. DeBoard on August 11, 1940 in Wichita, KS. Chris loved to travel, including all 50 states and 68 countries. She loved to play the organ, piano and all music in general. Chris was a gourmet cook and enjoyed eating out. She was a member of the Richfield Church of the Nazarene, and played the organ at the Independence Village of Frankenmuth.

Chris is survived by husband, Edward; daughters, Kona Sue (Melvin) McGinnis, Linda Joyce (Fred) Hall; 6 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by brother, William Gilbert.

BRYANT, Mr. Howard “J.C.” – Age 81, departed this life, Tuesday, February 16, 2010 at St. Mary’s in Saginaw, MI. Family hour 12Noon Wednesday, February 24, 2010 at Fairhaven Seventh Day Adventist, G-1379 W. Louis Ave., with funeral service commencing at 1 p.m., Eld. Truman Bryant officiating, Pastor Leon George, host pastor. Interment River Rest Cemetery, G-4413 Flushing Rd. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the church 12 Noon Wednesday. Mr. Bryant will lie in state in the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd., and may be viewed from 12 Noon-8 p.m. Tuesday. Mr. Bryant was born June 6th, 1928 in Carthage MS, to Arden and Birnicteen Bryant. Later his family moved to Walnut Grove, MS, where he attended and graduated from high school. He married Ernestine Wright before he joined the United States Army, in March of 1950. Serving in the Korean Conflict, he was captured and MIA for 2 weeks before being rescued. In January of 1952, he received an Honorable Discharge and was awarded a Purple heart from being wounded in captivity. Mr. Bryant returned back to his home town, and attended Alcorn State University in Lorman, MS, where he received his a BA Degree in Agriculture. He moved his family to Flint, Michigan, by way of Chicago to work for the General Motors Buick Plant on Industrial Avenue. Mr. Bryant always strived to find better work and pay to support his family. He worked at the Flint Main Postal Service in 1956 while studying for his Real Estate License. After overcoming many racial barriers from State and local Real Estate boards., he not only became a Licensed Sales Agent, but shortly passed the exam, and became the First Black Real Estate Broker in Genesee County. Years later, he was a 2 term elected President of the Flint Board of Realtors. Mr. Bryant was owner of Home and Suburban Realty Corporation. His first Office was in his home, then later moving to Harriet Street, West Flint Park Blvd., and then Clio Rd. Through the years, he motivated, and hired many African-American men, as well as women to becoming sales agents. In the Early 1960’s, along with former City officials he pushed to pass many Fair housing laws that were discriminating against Blacks who were unable to buy homes in segregated neighborhoods. He single handily stopped the Flint Journal from posting “Colored Owned” in the Real Estate listings of the Classified Ads. Being a businessman, he was always involved with other opportunities to make money and take care of his family. Mr. Bryant was a Spiritual man. He was baptized into the North Street Seventh-Day Adventist Church in 1958. Mr. Bryant was a devout Christian to his church; serving as Deacon, and Local Elder for many years. He especially devoted his attention to the church’s practices of healthy living; and always counseled his friends, strangers, and family members on healthy eating, and his Seventh-Day Adventist Religion. Mr. Bryant had a big heart for people of all Races. He never met a stranger. Mr. Bryant loved his 8 children, grand and great-grand children. He believed in providing a good Christian Education for his 8 children. Sending them to church school, Boarding Academies and Universities in Michigan. Later he donated Real Estate properties to Fairhaven Seventh-Day Adventist Church schools. His hobbies were his obsession with the latest “Electronic Gadgets”, talking about the Bible, and his love for the sport of Basketball. Mr. Bryant coached his church team for over 10 years. Taking them to a Lake Region Conference SDA Divisional Championship in 1983. He was a mentor, for many of the young men on his team. Surviving to carry on his legacy are: devoted 2nd wife of 34 years, Juanita H. Bryant; 7 daughters: Shirley R. Bryant of Willow Grove, PA., Serita (Frank) Jones of Atlanta, GA, Linda (Jimmie) Strong of Olympia Fields, IL, Conti (Allan) Norris, Chisandra (Fred) Lambert, Terri (Rufus) Braggs and Yvonne Bryant all of Flint; step daughter, Debra Harris of Columbus, OH; special god daughter, Tonya (Keith) Evans of Racine, WI; 14 grandchildren, Tonisha Sibley, Doelynne Strong, Janelle Strong, Linda “Baby” Sanford, Krishelle Murphy, Marcus and Matthew Jones, DeNiro Forte’, Gilbere Forte’, Clarissa, Candace, Christopher and Terrin Bryant, and Vincent Norris; 14 great-grandchildren; 3 brothers: Leon (Edna) Bryant, Shelby Jean (Lawana) Bryant, all of Flint and Truman (Xenia) Bryant, of Dallas, TX; 3 sisters: Quintealya Bryant of Silver Springs, MD, Bonnie (Oliver) McKinney of Decatur, GA and Arvonne (John) Starks of Silver Springs, MD; sister-in-law, Patricia (Houston) Bryant all of Flint; a host of nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles, close business associates, former Agents, secretaries in the Real Estate and Flint Community and members of his beloved Church family.  Helen was born in Bowling Green, Ohio on October 14, 1929, to Enoch and Nettie Canterbury. She was beloved wife of Milton Bolin for 40 years. She retired after 15 years from Sears Credit Department. She attended/volunteered at Grand Blanc Senior Center. She was the most generous and kind hearted soul on this earth – a true “Saint Helen”. She will be remembered in all our hearts and cherished as part of ourselves.

Funeral mass will be celebrated at 11 AM Wednesday, February 24, 2010 at Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Montrose. Rev. Fr. Steve Anderson officiating. Private burial in Ridgelawn Cemetery in Breckenridge. Friends may call at the O’Guinn Family Funeral Home in Montrose on Tuesday from 4-9 PM. A rosary will be prayed at 7 PM Tuesday evening at the funeral home. Mrs. Bauer will lie in state at the church on Wednesday from 10 am until time of mass. Jeanene was born April 11, 1934 in Chicago, IL. to the late Clifford and Genevieve (Cody) Walter. She graduated from Ithaca High School. Jeanene also graduated from Mid Michigan Community College as an LPN. She married Robert G. Kleinhans on September 13, 1952. He preceded her in death on December 31, 1985. She later married Francis Bauer on July 22, 1989. She had resided in Lyons, Michigan the past 22 years coming from Breckenridge. She also spent many winters in Zephyr Hills, Florida. Jeanene was employed as an LPN at Gratiot County Hospital in Alma for several years and with Dr. Sergio Ponzi in Breckenridge. She was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Portland and the Holy Name Monastery Catholic Church in FL. Jeanene was also active with the Benedictine Sisters of Florida. She served as a hospice volunteer and enjoyed travel.

Surviving are: husband: Francis; 5 children: Kevin (Leila)Kleinhans of Hawaii, Kimber (Matt) Hoey of CA., Tracy (George) Lambert of Okemos, Mark (Marcene) Kleinhans of Montrose and Jeff Kleinhans of Hawaii. 12 grandchildren. 8 great grandchildren. LANTIS, Patricia Ann, age 64 of Laingsburg, passed away on Thursday, February 18, 2010 at the Shiawasse County Medical Care Facility. A memorial service will be held at 2:00pm on Friday, February 26, 2010 at Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes, Durand Chapel with Rev. John Walworth officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday from 6-8pm.

Mrs. Lantis was born on December 5, 1945 the daughter of John and Beatrice (Fritz) Schroeder. On October 16, 1966 she married Don Junior Lantis in Bancroft and together raised 2 daughters. Mrs. Lantis enjoyed people and loved her grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband of 43 years, Don; 2 daughters: Tina (Jeffrey) Dafoe of Laingsburg, Tonya Lantis of Williamston; 4 grandchildren: Cassandra Dunham, Kelsie Dunham, Jacob Dafoe and Lucas Dafoe.

There will be no visitation or services. She was born in Iland, KY. August 4, 1924. Lillie was joined in marriage to Donald Green October 29, 1977 and he preceded her in death March 8, 2006. She’s remembered for her impeccable appearance. Surviving are daughter; Diane Miller (Mary), grandchildren; Cheryl (Russell) Blossom, David (Maria) Gray, Crystal Constant, Chris (Ray) Krajniak, Teresa (Jeff) Babcock, and Todd (Jennifer) Miller; 18 great grandchildren and 5 great great grandchildren, and her cat “Tipsy Baby”. She was preceded in death by son and daughter in law Joseph and Charlene Gray, parents George and Nellie King. Mike was born April 13, 1978 in Flint, Michigan to Ricky and Ann (White) Brown. He graduated from Lakeville High School in 1997 and had resided in Otisville since 1992 coming from Montrose. Mike was a volunteer firefighter with the Forest Township Fire Dept. He also was employed as a cabinet maker and taxidermist. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, snowmobiling and engine mechanics.

Surviving are: Mother: Ann (Lloyd) Stevens of Otisville; Father: Ricky Brown of Fenton; Sister: Michelle Brown of Millington; Grandmothers: Arlette Brown and Marilyn White, both of Clio. McKINSTRY, Helen L. – Of Lapeer, age 88, died Wednesday, February 17, 2010, with her family by her side at her residence. Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, February 22, 2010 at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road, Pastor Larry Burk officiating. Burial in Flint Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Missionary, Ron Self c/o the South Baptist Church. Visitation 12-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Sunday and 12 noon Monday until the time of the service at the funeral home. Helen was born in Kennett, Missouri on June 29, 1921, the daughter of the late Ira and Iva (Stein) Smith. On July 8, 1938 she married Clare McKinstry in Flint and he preceded her in death on January 25, 2005. She was a member of the South Baptist Church since 1947. Mrs. McKinstry worked at Buick taking Clare’s position when he left for World War II; she then worked at AC Spark Plug Division for 23 years, retiring in 1976. Surviving are children, JoAnn (Sheldon) Williams, Margaret Wallace and Ron (Linette) McKinstry; eight grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; brother, Richard (Sharon) Smith; dearest sister, Gloria Dugas; sister-in-law, Sarah Smith; many nieces and nephews.
