WOOD, Gary R. age 62 of Durand, passed away on Wednesday, March 9, 2011 following a brief battle with cancer.
Born on June 27, 1948 in Durand, the son of C.E. “Woody” Wood and Joan (Baxter), Gary graduated from Durand High School in 1966 and then went onto Northwood Institute to study Journalism until being drafted in 1969. He served his country from in the U.S. Army at Fort Campbell, KY as a cook until being honorably discharged in 1971. He returned home to help in the family business as a cook and owned and operated Herrick’s Restaurant working with his mother, Joan.
After selling the family business in 1977, Gary then worked for Shaw Services and Flint Vending Machine Company, retiring in 2010. He was a volunteer fireman with the Durand Fire Dept. in the 1970’s.
Gary was an avid sports fan with a great deal of knowledge of sports. His passion was the Michigan State Spartans, Detroit Tigers and Detroit Red Wings.
Gary will be loved and missed by his sisters: Vicky (Rich) Cesar of Durand and Michelle (Steve) Whitney of Crystal; Nieces: Lesley and Lindsey of Durand, Chelsea of Crystal and nephew, Johnathon of Stanton. He is also survived by great nephews: Tyler and Blake, and great niece, Kaylie; step-sisters: Jan (Bill) Moyer, Laura (Tom) Misner and step-brother, Terry Summers.
He was preceded in death by his father, C.E. “Woody” Wood; mother, Joan Summers; step-brother, Jeff Summers; step-father, Roy Summers.
As per Gary’s wishes, cremation has taken place and a private burial will be held at Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly.

SHILLING, Jill – of Flint, age 61, died Wednesday, March 9, 2011 after a short stay at Avalon Hospice. Funeral services will take place at 11 AM Saturday, March 12, 2011 at the O’Guinn Family Funeral Home – 239 E. Hickory St. in Montrose. Interment at Montrose Township Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 2-8 PM and Saturday from 10AM until time of service.

Jill was born January 25, 1950 in Flint, Michigan. She graduated from Hill – McCloy High School in Montrose in 1968. Reading was Jill’s favorite hobby. She also enjoyed bingo, board games, playing cards and family gatherings. Jill had a love for all children. She enjoyed spending time with her great nieces and nephews and telling stories of them. Holding a special place in Jill’s heart was her great nephew, Mikel and little Olivia who was like a granddaughter to her. She also had a love for people and made friends wherever she went. She was known to be generous to all who knew her.

Surviving are: Daughter, Nanette Shilling of Flint., Sisters: Zelda Smith of Flushing, Sue (Lee) Myers of North Branch, Brenda (Don) Batchelor of Waterford, Gloria (Ken) Walli of Grand Blanc and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two sons, Douglas Allen Shilling and Raymond Lawrence Shilling; Brother: John Calvin Harrison and parents: Zeldon (Bud) and Freda Harrison. Visitation 1-3 and 5-8pm Sunday at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road. A Scripture Service will be held 7pm Sunday evening at the funeral home. Thomas was born in Flint on March 5, 1988, the son of Joseph and Tracy (Deacons) Rothley. He graduated from Carmen Ainsworth High School in 2006 and loved playing hockey. Surviving are sister, Kelli; Nieces, Jade and Jayla; Grandparents, Jim and Connie Rothley and LaVern and Lauretta (Nichols) Deacons; Many aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Tracy Rothley, great-grandparents, William and Bertha Owen, James and Vesta Rothley.

Joseph was born in Flint, Michigan on June 27, 1963, the son of Jim and Connie (Owen) Rothley. He attended grade school at Holy Redeemer and graduated from Flint Southwestern High School. He worked at Chrysler Corporation. He was an avid mountain biker, and loved playing hockey and spending time with his granddaughters. Joseph was the proud father of Kelli Rothley and Thomas (deceased). Surviving are daughter, Kelli Rothley; Granddaughters, Jade and Jayla; Parents, Jim and Connie Rothley; Brothers, Jim Jr., John and wife Sheila and Jeffrey; Sisters, Teri and husband Alex Karayanis, Patti and husband Ron Kucinsky, Sue Rothley and Mark Papke, Kathy and husband Curt Russell; Many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his wife, Tracy Rothley.

GUELDE, William E. – of Flint, age 84, passed away March 9, 2011 at Genesys Health Park. A Funeral Service will be held 1:00 PM Saturday, March 12, 2011 at Atherton United Methodist Church, 4010 Lippincott Blvd., Burton; Pastor Bruce L. Billing officiating. Cremation will follow the service. Visitation will be 11 AM-8 PM Friday at Allen Funeral Home, 9136 Davison Rd., Davison. On Saturday, there will be one hour of visitation prior to the service at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to Atherton United Methodist Church.
William was born in Flint, MI on February 18, 1927, son of the late William and Ethel (Bird) Guelde. He graduated from Kearsley High School in 1945 and was a World War II Veteran. William married Joyce Nelson on January 18, 1947 in Flint, MI. He was a member of Atherton United Methodist Church where he served on the Board of Trustees. William loved guns, woodworking and spending time with his family. He retired from Buick in 1982 after 36 ½ years of service.
William is survived by his wife, Joyce; daughter, Sheryl (Jimmie) Owens; son, Rex W. Guelde; daughter, Toni (Larry) Bartman; daughter, Marcia (Tom) Madaras; grandchildren, Michael (Kristina) Owens, Brian (fiancé, Lori) Owens, Deanna (Tom) Ruhstorfer, Kari (Travis) Prescott, Kati (Kris) Allinger, Ashley and Danny Madaras; 7 great-grandchildren; brother, James Guelde; sister, Virginia Smith; many nieces and nephews. HAKEL, EDWARD E. of Otisville, age 83, was called home to the Lord, Thursday March 10, 2011 at Brian’s House, Davison. Funeral Services will be held 11:00 AM Monday March 14, 2011 at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Otisville, with Rev. Fr. Francis Farachi officiating. Visitation will be Saturday Noon to 7 PM, Sunday 10:30 AM to 8 PM, Prayer Service will be held Sunday at 7 PM at Hudson Funeral Service. Burial will be in Smith Hill Cemetery. Contributions may be made to the family.

Edward enjoyed farming, snowmobiling, woodworking, and his family. He was a member of Disabled American Vets. and Fraternal Order of Police. He worked as a law enforcement officer for Dayton Hudson Co.
