Friday, March 4th, 2011WHARRY, Marian F. – Of Flint, age 89, died Thursday, March 3, 2011 at Avalon Hospice. Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, March 5, 2011 at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road, Pastor Steve Wood officiating. Burial in Sunset Hills Cemetery. Contributions may be made to the family. Visitation 10 a.m. Saturday until the time of the service at the funeral home.
Marian was born in Baldwin, MI on March 14, 1921, daughter of the late Arthur and Ida (Pundt) Wallace and was a resident of Baldwin and Flint. She married Orville “Jim” Wharry in Flint in 1945. Marian enjoyed league bowling and card club. She was an extraordinary mother. Surviving are husband, Jim; sons, Jim and Karen Wharry of Garland TX and Ralph and wife Laurene Wharry of Battle Creek, MI; grandchildren, Pat and wife Sara Wharry, Pam and husband Mark Johnson, Brad Wharry, Ryan and wife Laura Wharry and one step-granddaughter, Courtney; 5 great grandchildren; brother, Buzzy Wallace; brother-in-law, Ralph and wife Jenny Wharry. She was preceded in death by brothers, Arthur, John and Howard, sister, Thelma, sister-in-law, Ella Mae and husband Nick Calandro.
ROCKMAN, SR., Richard Glenn – 81
Friday, March 4th, 2011Mr. Rockman was born August 6, 1929 in Fenton, the son of Glenn and Pauline (Kader) Rockman. He was a proud graduate of the 10th grade at Fenton High School. He married Ella Conrad on February 19, 1949 in Fenton and she preceded him in death on August 25, 1997. On April 15, 2005 he married Diane Sheldon. Rick was a lifelong member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, the Michigan Harness Racing Association, The Kiwanis Club, Michigan Press Association, Fenton Chamber of Commerce and Spring Meadows Country Club. An avid football player, coach and fan, Rick played semi-pro football for the Fenton Independents and the Flint Sabres, and was invited to a tryout for halfback for the Detroit Lions in 1950, where he was regretfully told “your legs are too skinny.” Early in the fifties he became the Police Commissioner of Linden, in addition to owning and operating the Linden Leader newspaper. Rick was a prolific business owner and operator. After selling the Linden Leader, he moved to Fenton in the late 1950s and created his second newspaper, the Tri-County Advertiser, which later became the Tri-County News. He and partner Dean Moore built the Fenton Mini-Mall, and owned and operated Valley Furniture. In 1994 Rick started the Tri-County Times, which today provides nearly 80 jobs for area residents. He was also part owner of Rockman Communications, Tri-County Wireless and Rockman and Sons Publishing. One of Rick’s hobbies was owning and wagering on race horses, especially Rambling Ronnie, his record-setting pacer. Rick authored the popular newspaper column, Straight from the Shoulder, for over 30 years.
Surviving are: wife, Diane; 5 children, Richard Rockman, Jr. and wife Karen of Fenton, Craig Rockman and wife Bethany of Fenton, Deborah Rockman of Grand Rapids, Lisa Branham of Fenton, Ron Rockman of Boynton Beach, FL and special friend, Robert “Flash” Gordon; 12 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren; sister, Glenda Smith and husband Russell; 2 brothers, Harold Rockman and Roy Rockman and wife Debbie; sisters-in-law, Barb MacLennan and Rosalind Oberheim and husband Skip; He was preceded in death by his parents; sons, Randall John Rockman and Glenn Rockman; brother, Raymond Rockman. Friday, March 4th, 2011BOYER, Kenneth C., Sr. – age 86, of Flushing, died March 3, 2011 at his residence. Funeral services will be held 11 AM Monday, March 7, 2011 at Sharp Funeral Homes, Miller Road Chapel, 8138 Miller Rd., Swartz Creek. Burial will follow in Sunset Hills Cemetery. Visitation will be held 1-8 PM Sunday.
Ken was born April 29, 1924 in Flint, the son of Glenn and Elizabeth Boyer. He married Evelyn “Mickie” McLain on June 30, 1945; she preceded him in death on April 12, 2003. Mr. Boyer retired from Wisconsin National Life in 1989. Surviving are: children, Karen Padgett, Ken Boyer II, Jim and wife Kathy Boyer; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two great great-grandchildren; brother, Ralph and wife Sophia Boyer, Keith Boyer; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother, Glenn Boyer. A special thank you to his grandson, Michael and wife Beth Padgett, great-grandson, Miller Padgett and neighbor, Jan Wallen.
