ROGERS, Shawn M. (Trout) – Of Grand Blanc, age 42, lost a brief three day battle with Leukemia on Tuesday, February 15, 2011 at Genesys Regional Medical Center.
Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, February 20, 2011 at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road, Pastor Ralph Helm officiating. Burial in Crestwood Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the “Rogers Children College Fund”, c/o Flagstar Bank, G-6200 South Saginaw Rd, Grand Blanc, MI 48439. Visitation 6-9 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. Sunday until the time of the service at the funeral home.
Shawn was born in Flint, Michigan on September 26, 1968, and was a 1986 graduate of Linden High School. Shawn married Les Rogers on June 11, 1994 in Linden. Shawn graduated from Western Michigan University with her Bachelor’s in Education and was in the process of obtaining her Master’s Degree at the University of Michigan.
She enjoyed scrapbooking, snowmobiling, watching her children playing sports, and spending her summers in Mackinaw City. Shawn was employed as a First Grade Teacher at Reid Elementary School in Grand Blanc. Shawn touched the lives of many young students and people in her community. She was a kind soul with a tender heart and a tenacious attitude for life.
Shawn leaves behind her best friend and loving husband, Les; sons, Matthew and Mitchell and Labrador Tilly; parents, David Michael and wife Jane Trout of Laura, Ohio, Holly and husband Mario Rodriguez of Mackinaw City; sister, Shannon and husband Mike Adams of Linden; brother, Jim Trout and sister, Sally Trout; grandparents, Ruth Rogers of Flint, Imogene McBride of Pleasant Hill, Ohio, James and wife Edith Trout of Flint, MI; in-laws, Jerry Rogers of Flushing and Linda Rogers of Holly; sister-in-law, Lori Rogers of Flint; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

PACHOLKA, Irene 71 of Sanford and a wonderful servant of the Lord was called to her heavenly home after a valiant struggle with ALS-Lou Gehrig’s disease on Thursday, February 17, 2011 at her home. There she was welcomed by four of her sons. She was born June 27, 1939 in Midland, daughter of the late Joseph and Pauline (Pes) Radosa. She graduated from Sacred Heart High School in Merrill. The former Irene Radosa married Kenneth Pacholka on August 21, 1965 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Ryan. Irene was an every ready caregiver to friends and family in need. She welcomed all into her home, both old and new friends. She will be missed by her casino trip friends, many many rummage salers, and the Pacholka Pig Roast will never be the same. Irene was a well loved cake decorator. Besides making her daughter’s wedding cakes, she made many of her nieces, nephews and friends graduation and wedding cakes. She also made cakes for many events at St. Agnes Catholic Church. Irene was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church and a member of their Ladies Alter Society and a member of the first Catholic Slovak Union.
She is survived by her husband, Ken; one son, Jeff Pacholka of Sanford; two daughters, Michele (Chris) Reinke of Midland, and Patricia (Tom) Carson of Oceanside, CA; one granddaughter, Michele Irene Reinke; two brothers, Steve (Leah) Radosa of Freeland and Frank (Barb) Radosa of Merrill; and one sister, Katherine Stevens of Midland. In addition to her parents, Irene was predeceased by four sons, Kevin, Wayne, Doug and Stanley; by one sister, Josephine Smolek; by her parents-in-law, Walter and Minnie Pacholka and one sister-in-law, Katie Atton. The Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated 10 a.m. Monday, February 21, 2011, from St. Agnes Catholic Church. Father Daniel J. Fox OFM Cap will officiate with burial at Midland Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
Irene’s family will receive friends at the Ware-Smith-Woolever Funeral Home, 1200 West Wheeler Street, on Saturday from 6-8 p.m., Sunday 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. and at the church on Monday from 9 a.m. until time of mass. A vigil for the deceased will take place 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider ALS of Michigan or the Pacholka Scholarship Fund.

LAWSON, Eugene H. – of Davison, age 71, passed away February 16, 2011 at his residence. A Funeral Service will be held 11 am Monday, February 21, 2011 at Judson Baptist Church, 4471 E. Atherton Rd., Burton; Pastor Greg Rowan officiating. Burial will be in Davison Cemetery. Visitation will be 11 am-2 pm and 4-8 pm Saturday; 2-7 pm Sunday at Allen Funeral Home, 9136 Davison Rd., Davison. On Monday, there will be visitation at the church for one hour prior to the service. Memorial contributions may be made to Judson Baptist Church Missions.
Eugene was born in Flint on November 26, 1939, son of the late Harold and Roline (Bartram) Lawson. He married his high school sweetheart, Anita Darby, on September 20, 1958. Eugene was a member of Judson Baptist Church. He and Anita enjoyed owning and operating Potter Lake Shore Campground. Eugene was a Meat Cutter for 51 years.
Eugene is survived by his wife, Anita; daughters, Cindy (Arndt) Weierstahl and Cherie Kukielka; grandchildren, Cassandra Kukielka, Krystal, Katarina, Kaytie, Krysti, Kristian Weierstahl; sister, Nancy Mathews and her family. He was preceded in death by his grandson, Christopher Kukielka; brother, James Lawson and father-in-law and mother-in-law, William and Doris Darby.

KWAST, DR., Harold – 80

KWAST, Doctor Harold of Midland died on February 15, 2011 at his home of pancreatic cancer. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and caring physician. He was born on January 6, 1931 in Lansing, son of Gustav and Bertha (Bothe) Kwast. Harold graduated from Eastern High School in Lansing and from Michigan State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology. He was a member of the Phi Kappa Phi honor society. Harold married llah Ballmer on June 11, 1955 in Lansing Michigan, while still in medical school. He received his Medical Degree from the University of Michigan in 1956, and interned at St. Lawrence Hospital in Lansing. Doctor Kwast served as a Captain in the US Army. Besides basic officer orientation, he had additional training at the US Air Force School of Aviation Medicine at Randolph Field, Texas, and at the US Army School of Aviation Medicine at Fort Rucker, Alabama. He served as Aviation Medical Officer for the US Army at Camp Zama, Japan.

Following his military commitment, he completed a residency in Internal Medicine at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, followed by a Cardiology Fellowship at the same Institution. He came to Midland in 1964 joining Doctors Robert Ballmer and Robert Bridge and established a practice in Cardiology and Internal Medicine. In 1965, Doctor Kwast in conjunction with Doctor Bridge established a dedicated Coronary Care unit at Midland Hospital, the first such unit in the Saginaw Valley. Doctor Kwast served as Medical Director of the coronary care unit for over 30 years. He held many positions at Mid-Michigan Medical Center. For many years, he was the director of the Cardiac Rehabilitation Unit, chairman of the Department of Internal Medicine, and director of the Non-evasive Cardiology Laboratory. He was also past President of the Midland County Medical Society and a member of the hospital Staff Executive Committee. He was a voluntary medical staff instructor in Internal Medicine and Cardiology for the Family Practice Residency program at Mid-Michigan Medical Center for 38 years. Doctor Kwast was also a consultant to the Michigan Department of Public Health Cardiovascular Task-Force and a lecturer for the Michigan Heart Association. He especially enjoyed teaching electrocardiography and cardiac auscultation to resident physicians and nurses. Doctor Kwast belonged to many medical organizations as follows: Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and for four years a member of the Michigan Chapter Legislative affairs Committee, Fellow of the American College of Physicians, Council of Clinical Cardiology or the American Heart Association, Fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians, American Society of Echocardiography, American Society of Internal Medicine, American Medical Association, Michigan State Medical Society, and the Midland County Medical Society. One of his great joys was traveling around the world with his loving wife Ilah. He had the opportunity to visit 106 countries and all seven continents. The most memorable events were five African wildlife photo safaris, and viewing the spectacular scenery and animal life in Antarctica and the Arctic.
He enjoyed photography, bird and animal watching, golf, as well as time at his vacation home at Houghton Lake entertaining family and friends. He loved classical music and opera. He began listening to the Metropolitan Opera radio broadcasts as a teenager and missed very few broadcasts over the next sixty years. In recent years, he was able to attend many Metropolitan Opera productions in New York City as well as opera performances in London, Vienna, Moscow, and Prague. In his early adult years, he was an accomplished artist, painting with oil on canvas. He also had great interest in history, geography, American and world literature. He did extensive genealogical archival research in the United States, Germany and the Ukraine. He interviewed many cousins in Germany regarding a distinct ethnic group, “The Germans from Russia.” In 2007, he published the result of his many years of research. Doctor Kwast contributed time to community service, being member of the Midland-Dow Community Advisory Panel for a number of years. He served on the board of the Pardee Cancer Treatment Fund of Midland for 18 years. He was predeceased by his parents, his three brothers and their spouses; Reinhard (Elsie), Alfred (Walda), Rudolph; his two sisters and spouses; Olga (Edward) Powell, and Erna (Otto) Strauss. He is survived by his wife Ilah, two sons and spouses, Karl (Ann) of Midland, Kurt (Joanne) and granddaughters Mikayla Rose and Naomi Ruth of Long Beach, California; a sister-in-law, Leola (Becker) Kwast, a number of nieces and nephews, many grand and great-grand nieces and nephews, and three special honorary grandchildren, Terra, Sarah, and Sam Doctor Kwast was cremated at his request. There will be a memorial service celebrating his life, 2 p.m. Saturday, February 26, 2011, from the First United Methodist Church. Rev. Dr. Brent McCumons will officiate. Inurnment will be at Deepdale Memorial Gardens, Lansing, Michigan. Doctor Kwast family will receive friends at the Ware-Smith Woolever Funeral Home, 1200 West Wheeler Street, on Friday from 5-7 p.m. and at the church on Saturday from 1 p.m. until time of service. Ploof officiating. Burial at Calvary Cemetery in Mt. Morris. Friends may call at the O’Guinn Family Funeral Home in Clio on Saturday and Sunday from 2-4 & 6-9 PM. There will be a memorial by the American Legion Auxiliary at 6:30 PM Sunday followed by a Vigil and Rosary at 7 PM. She will lie in state at the church on Monday from 9 AM until time of Mass. Beulah was born January 26, 1908 in Vassar to the late Herbert and Abigail (Rowley) Ackerman. She married Vincent Joyce on October 20, 1928 in Toledo, OH. He preceded her in death on March 23, 1983. After raising her family, she studied and received her master’s degree from Eastern Michigan University. Mrs. Joyce then retired as a school teacher from Clio Area Schools in 1972 with 26 years seniority. She was a member of Saints Charles and Helena Catholic Church, American Legion Auxiliary, Clio Area Seniors, Thetford Red Hat Society, Half Century Club, Bethany Methodist Seniors and Charlie’s Angels.
Surviving are: children, Jean Schroeder of Port Huron, Patricia “Gail” Smith of Davison, Clarice Dougherty of Charlotte, Carol (Hank) Bielert of Clio, Richard Joyce of Interlochen; daughter-in-law, Dottie Joyce of MS; grandchildren, great-grandchildren; great-great-grandchildren. She married Constantine Ewka on June 9, 1962. She was a very active member of the Holiday Ramblers Travel Club and was a member of the White Shrine. Mrs. Ewka was employed by AC Spark Plug Division, retiring in 1976. Surviving are husband, Constantine “Connie”; three daughters, Shawn Ewka, Shannon Ewka, Sheley (Abe) Erspamer; six grandchildren; sister, Clara Jo (Norman) Spoor; her cherished dog, Stoli; six grand-puppies; three grand-kitties; several nieces and nephews. Ron was born September 3, 1937 in Flint to the late Francis and Dorothy (Zuellig) Belill and resided in the Clio area over 48 years. He married Joanne Miller on June 20, 1959 in Flint. Mr. Belill owned and operated the Harris Rexall Drug Store in Clio, then worked and retired from McLaren Hospital. He later assisted at Borden’s Pharmacy for many years. Ron was a member of the Bethany United Methodist Church, Clio Historical Society, National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors, and was active in many civic functions.
