TOLENE, Merrill Keith – age 85, of Linden, died Tuesday, February 15, 2011 at his residence. Funeral mass will be celebrated 10:30 AM Friday, February 18, 2011 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 600 N. Adelaide St., Fenton with Rev. Fr. David Harvey celebrant. Interment will follow at St. John Cemetery. Visitation will be held 2-4 and 6-9 PM Thursday at Sharp Funeral Homes, Fenton Chapel, 1000 W. Silver Lake Rd., Fenton where a rosary will be prayed at 7 PM Thursday night followed by a 4th Knight of Columbus service. Mr. Tolene was born December 7, 1925 in DePue, IL, the son of Clarence A. and Nira Elsie (Wade) Tolene. He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corp and retired from General Motors in 1982 after 27 years of service. Mr. Tolene married Dolores Marie Turchi on October 22, 1946 and she preceded him in death on February 3, 2009. Mr. Tolene was a member St. John the Evangelist in Fenton and St. Catherine in Sebring, FL. HE was also active in the Knights of Columbus. Surviving are four children, Berry K. Tolene of AL, Dale A. Tolene of Glens Falls, NY, Marilyn K. (Edward) Crist of Flint, Thomas N. (Bella) Tolene of Fenton; 18 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; sister, Ordelle Hoffmann of OR. NILES, Donald E. — Age 83, of Swartz Creek, died February 14, 2011 at Genesys Hospice Care Center, Goodrich. Funeral Services will be 11 AM Friday, February 18 at the Swartz Creek United Methodist Church, Pastor J.D. Landis officiating. Those desiring may make contributions to the Swartz Creek United Methodist Church Education Fund. Mr. Niles was born August 16, 1927 in Berkley, MI, the son on Jack and Nellie (Russell) Niles. He had resided in Flint and Swartz Creek most of his life. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He married Mary Comer on May 8, 1961 in Flint; she preceded him in death January 13, 2008. He retired from Fisher Body. He was a member of the Swartz Creek United Methodist Church. He held several volunteer positions within the City of Swartz Creek; he served on the tax review board, he was a founding volunteer of Hometown Days, and assisted his wife Mary Niles Mayor Pro-tem for many years. Mr. Niles was an avid fisherman, dog lover and enjoyed coaching kids. Surviving are four children, Christopher and wife Suzanne Niles of Tracy, CA, Toni Godley of Flint, Donald and wife Sandy Niles of Durand, Michael and wife Shelly Niles of Swartz Creek; six grandchildren, Nikki and husband Shawn Klanseck, Tom Somers, Alexandria and Victoria Niles, Christina and Jillian Niles; three great grandchildren; sister Ethel Marilyn and husband Norris Griggs of Grand Blanc; brother William Evans and wife Millie of Florida. ATKINS, A. Fred long time Vassar resident passed away Sunday February 13, 2011 while at the St. Mary’s Medical Center in Saginaw, Fred was 78. Albert Frederick (Fred) Atkins the son of the late Carson & Vera (Runge) Atkins was born in Saginaw Michigan on October 25, 1932. Fred grew up in Vassar and as a youngster he was a Boy Scout and held the distinct honor of being an Eagle Scout, Fred was a 1951 graduate from the Vassar High School, after high school Fred served a tour of duty in the US-Navy. When Fred returned home from the Navy he joined the family business with his brother and father. Fred was co-owner of the Atkins Hardware and Furniture for 59years. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Vassar, served 21 years on the Vassar Fire Department, and served 25 years as the President of the Vassar Fishing Club. Fred love to bowl, fish, play golf, and spend time with family and friends.
Fred leaves his children; Dan Atkins, David & Theresa Atkins, Diane Ford, and Mark & Desiree’ Atkins, grandchildren; Jason & Stephanie, Jill & Dan, Rex, Jacob & Jennifer ,Jessica Steele, Hunter, Taylor, and Chase, great-grandchildren; Bristel, Abbrie, Nicholas, Gabrielle, Emily,, Jordan, and Cuyler, brother and sister in-law; Robert (Bob) & Betty Atkins, close and very dear friend Lois Faber, and several nieces , nephews and extended family and friends.

LANE, Richard Paul, 83, of Midland, died Thursday morning, February 10, 2011 at his home. He was born August 16, 1927 in Dayton, Ohio, son of the late Dwight and Edith (Tompkins) Lane and attended Wilbur Wright High School in Dayton. Richard graduated from Purdue University as an Aeronautical Engineer. He served in the United States Navy during WWII aboard a light cruiser in the Pacific. As a 35-year employee of The Dow Chemical Company, Richard promoted magnesium metal to the aviation and missile industries for 10 years, and Styrofoam® plastic foam to the construction markets. After retirement, he formed Artboard Corporation in Ludington, and served as its president for five years. As a private pilot, Richard had a lifelong interest in aviation. He was known for his sense of humor and his interest in the arts, and he had traveled throughout the U.S. and the world.
Richard is survived by Christine, his wife of 56 years; four children, Mark Lane of Montrose, Colorado, Michelle Lane and son-in-law Lawton Howard of St. Simons Island, Georgia, Christa Lane-Larsen and son-in-law Dave Larsen of Woodbury, Minnesota, Lisa Lane of Walled Lake; grandchildren Christina Larsen, Peter Larsen and Erin Allanson. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert and Glenn.

HERRINGTON, T.W. (Pete) – Of Flint, age 92, died on Monday, February 14, 2011 at Genesys Convalescent Center. Funeral service will be held at 2p.m. Saturday, February 19, 2011 at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road, Mr. Bill Maguffee officiating. Burial in Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation 12 p.m. Saturday until the time of the service at the funeral home. Mr. Herrington was born in Kerwood, Ontario, Canada on October 20, 1918, the son of Berton and Ethel (Wilson) Herrington and was a resident of Flint most of his life. On September 25, 1937 he married Mary L. Mize in LaGrange, Indiana. He served in the U.S, Army during World War II. He was a member of Swartz Creek Church of Christ. He was also a member of the GM Executive Club and member of the Retirement Group of Greater Flint. Mr. Herrington graduated from Flint Central High School, he attended G.M.I, Yuba City College, California and Mott Community College. Mr. Herrington was employed by General Motors Parts Division, retiring in 1980. Surviving are two daughters, Sondra K. Creasey of Grand Blanc, Harriet S. and husband Kenneth Linkowski, of Ft. Myers, FL; five grandchildren, Rob (Karen) Creasey and John (Stephanie) Creasey, Bob (Paige) Linkowski, Paul (Robin) Linkowski and Jill (Allen) Fraser; Seven great-grandchildren, Robby and Elizabeth Creasey, John Watson Creasey, Conner Linkowski, Mia and Ben Fraser and Truman Linkowski; brother, James (Donelda) Herrington; sister, Marjorie J. Dunn; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary “Lucy”, on May 1, 2002, son-in-law, Charles R. Creasey, 1 brother and 5 sisters. Mr. Herrington was a man with a kind heart who was devoted to his church and family.

BURTRAW, Lydia Marie, age 50 of Laingsburg, passed away suddenly and went into the arms of the Lord on Saturday February 12, 2011.
Funeral services will be held at Graham Community Church on Friday February 18, 2011 at 11:00 AM. Pastor Mike Hixson and Pastor Ronald Burtraw will officiate. The family will receive friends at Watkins Brothers Funeral Home in Perry on Thursday 2-4 & 6-8 PM.
Lydia was born in Lansing, Michigan on September 17, 1960, the daughter of Roger Sr. & Ellie (Baecker) Ling. She graduated from DeWitt High School in 1978 and then received her bachelor’s Degree from MSU. On August 7, 1982 she married her high school sweetheart & love of her life, Michael R. Burtraw in East Lansing. Lydia worked in the mortgage industry for many years, recently as branch manager for Amera Mortgage Corporation in East Lansing. She was a member of the Downtown Coaches Club, Women’s Council of Realtors, and MMLA.
She is survived by her husband, Michael, children Lindsey , Brandon, and Taylor, of Laingsburg. Her parents Roger Sr. and Ellie Ling of Lansing, brothers Roger, Jr.(Linda) of L’Anse, MI, Daniel (Patty) of Laingsburg, sister Michelle (Mark) Diamond of Williamston, father-in-law Ronald Burtraw (Bonnie) and Mother-in-law Merle Doyle (Ray), sister-in-law Jennifer (Joe) Kirschner of Metamora, MI, numerous nieces and nephews and extended family.
She loved her husband and children with all her heart. She was very giving and will be remembered by many for her generous and loving spirit. She never knew a stranger. She was always willing to lend a hand and reach out to those in need. Lydia was an avid Spartan fan and loved attending sporting events. She enjoyed reading, singing, vacationing, skydiving and playing Euchre with her club. Her beautiful voice is singing with Heaven’s choir, but here on earth her silence leaves a hole in our hearts.

Eugene was born in Flint, MI on November 13, 1929, son of the late Walter and Della (Maresh) Barth. He married Gertrude Burnham on September 10, 1949. Eugene was a member of the Masonic Lodge #236 and a lifetime member of NRA. He was an avid hunter who also enjoyed treasure hunting with his metal detector. Eugene enjoyed camping in Traverse City on Lake Leelanau. He was a supervisor in the Buick Foundry and retired in 1987 after 44 years of loyal service.
Eugene is survived by his wife, Gertrude; children, Paul R. (Karen) Barth, Sue A. (Charles) Klenk, Gloria L. (Chris) Henderson, Carol E. (Pat) Doyle, Gary E. (Kittie) Barth; 8 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Elaine (William) DeMars; and many other family members and friends. ALLEN, Harold C., age 86 of Perry, passed away at his residence on Thursday February 10, 2011. Harold was born in Williamston, MI on December 26, 1924, the son of Blandford and Ruby (Wyrick) Allen. He served his country during WWII in the U.S. Air Force from 1942-1945. On June 24, 1949 he married Reathel Hill in Perry. They celebrated 61 years of marriage last year. Harold worked for Motor Wheel of Lansing for 42 years before retiring.
Harold is survived by his wife, Reathel, daughters; Kay A. Brown of Perry and Cherie Shorman of E. Lansing, sons; Arnold, Jeffery and Gregg all of Perry and Ray (Jessica) of DeWitt, MI., 2 brothers; Linden (Florence) of Houghton Lake and George (Carol) of Six Lakes, 8 sisters; Mabel Harshman of CA, Erma Kutchinski of Stanwood, MI, Evelyn (Elmer) Eckert of Six Lakes, Vivian (Norvell) Landes of Mt. YBARRA, Placido – Age 101, of Flushing, died February 10, 2011 at Brian’s House in Davison. Mr. Ybarra was born in Texas on October 5, 1909, the son of the late Amador and Maria Ybarra. He retired from G. M. Plant 10 in 1971. He was especially dedicated to his family and enjoyed fishing and gardening. Also, Placido was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He is survived by his children, Alphonso (Mary) Ybarra, Mary (Al) Brookshire, Richard (Anita) Ybarra, Reynoldo (Sharon Amy) Ybarra, Theresa (John) Cuddeback, Victoria Ybarra and John (Annie) Ybarra; 25 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren and two great, great-grandchildren.
